The Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM) is a global educational authority and interprofessional community of healthcare providers, researchers, and academics united by the common goal of advancing knowledge, practice, and policies that champion treating the whole person—mind, body, spirit, community, and planet. AIHM represents the bridging of once disparate silos across health and medicine, serving as a call to action to guide and accelerate transformation in how we think about health and healthcare by seeing and treating the patient as a whole. Today, the Academy is a welcoming home to an ever-broadening international community of healthcare practitioners, health seekers, and health advocates connected by a shared philosophy of prioritizing Whole Health care, recognizing the link between whole health and the social and cultural determinants that impact it.
Why It Matters: Transforming healthcare requires bridging the professional silos that have kept practitioners isolated in separate disciplines, unable to collaborate on whole-person care that addresses mind, body, spirit, community, and planet together. By creating an interprofessional community where diverse practitioners share a unifying philosophy rather than competing approaches, AIHM builds the relationships and shared understanding necessary for integrated care to become a reality. The expansion of “whole person” to include community and planet reflects recognition that individual health cannot be separated from social, cultural, and environmental determinants—requiring practitioners unified in one voice and vision to improve our essential relationships to ourselves, one another, and the world we share.
