AI for Good was established in 2017 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ leading agency for digital technologies, with a mission to unlock AI’s potential to serve humanity through building skills, AI standards, and advancing partnerships. Organized by ITU in partnership with over 50 UN Sister Agencies and co-convened with the Government of Switzerland, AI for Good has evolved from its inaugural 2017 Global Summit in Geneva into a vibrant multi-stakeholder community including governments, academia, industry, civil society, and UN agencies, now with over 37,000 active contributors spanning more than 180 countries. The platform has delivered action-oriented Global Initiatives on AI and Data Commons, AI for Health (with WHO), Resilience to Natural Hazards through AI Solutions, AI for Road Safety (with UNECE), and pre-standardization work on AI for telecommunications, digital agriculture (with FAO), and environmental efficiency. AI for Good continues hosting the flagship annual Global Summit alongside regional impact events, youth robotics challenges, hackathons, and the International AI Standards Summit.
Why It Matters: AI for Good provides UN-backed infrastructure for ensuring AI development serves humanity broadly rather than concentrating benefits among those already privileged—operating under the principle that “we are the AI generation, and it is our responsibility to ensure that no one is left behind.” By connecting innovators with problem owners through partnerships spanning health, road safety, natural disasters, agriculture, and telecommunications, the platform translates AI potential into practical solutions for sustainable development. The emphasis on AI standards and capacity building for member states addresses the reality that safe, secure, and trustworthy AI systems require international coordination and shared governance frameworks that no single nation or company can establish alone.
