The Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) brings together private sector, governments, and civil society actors from across the globe to deliver the policies needed to reduce the cost to connect and make universal, affordable internet access a reality for all. Recognizing that the high cost of an internet connection is keeping billions around the world from coming online, A4AI’s work is driven by the belief that affordability should not be a barrier to internet access and that policy and regulatory reform represent the best tools to reduce the cost to connect. To achieve the goal of affordable access for all, A4AI employs a combination of research, regional engagement, and policy advocacy—underpinned by a set of policy and regulatory good practices that have been agreed to by all A4AI members. A4AI is hosted by the World Wide Web Foundation.
Why it matters: A4AI addresses the reality that billions of people remain offline not due to lack of infrastructure or technical capability but because the cost of internet connection is prohibitively high, requiring policy and regulatory reform rather than solely technological solutions.
