Bill Plotkin

Eco-Depth Psychologist, Wilderness Guide, Animas Valley Institute Founder
Story is the very fabric of our lives. Every life begins and ends with a story and, taken as a whole, is a story. Every relationship is a story. Every dream. Every experience. Each soul—whether embodied or not in that person's life—is a story longing to be told.

Bill Plotkin, Ph.D., is a depth psychologist, wilderness guide, and agent of cultural evolution who founded western Colorado’s Animas Valley Institute in 1981 (originally 1980) and has since guided thousands of seekers through nature-based initiatory passages, including a contemporary Western adaptation of the pan-cultural vision fast, having previously been a research psychologist studying non-ordinary states of consciousness, professor of psychology, psychotherapist, rock musician, and whitewater river guide before experiencing a call to adventure in 1979 during a solo winter ascent of an Adirondack peak that led him to abandon academia in search of his true calling.

Plotkin is the author of four books that map the journey of soul initiation and human development through nature-based frameworks: “Soulcraft: Crossing into the Mysteries of Nature and Psyche” (an experiential guidebook), “Nature and the Human Soul: Cultivating Wholeness and Community in a Fragmented World” (a nature-based stage model of human development introducing eight stages of a soulcentric and ecocentric life cycle), “Wild Mind: A Field Guide to the Human Psyche” (a nature-based map identifying the four facets of the Self and four sets of fragmented subpersonalities), and “The Journey of Soul Initiation: A Field Guide for Visionaries, Evolutionaries, and Revolutionaries” (phase-by-phase guidance for the descent to soul and metamorphosis of ego into co-creator of life-enhancing culture, including in-depth exploration of Carl Jung’s Red Book).

Through Animas Valley Institute, Plotkin and his trained guides have created and shaped over 40 contemporary practices that assist people of Western cultures in their quests for more meaningful, fulfilling, and culturally engaged lives aligned with nature, soul, and the Great Turning, offering programs including 12-day contemporary wilderness fasts, 5-day intensives, online immersions, and the Soulcraft Apprenticeship and Initiation Program (SAIP) for training nature-based Soul-Initiation Guides, with guides leading programs in the United States, Canada, Scotland, Australia, Latvia, and other countries worldwide.

Plotkin received his doctorate in psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and has been honored by many professional associations while maintaining that the human species has entered a collective dark night requiring radical cultural transformation—an evolution of consciousness where humans thrive in mutually enhancing relationship with Earth, know our cosmic origins, and offer our unique mythopoetic gifts as initiated adults serving the greater Earth community.

Why their voice matters: Plotkin bridges depth psychology, wilderness rites of passage, and ecological consciousness to provide contemporary Westerners with practical frameworks for discovering their unique mythopoetic identity and true calling, demonstrating that genuine maturity requires soul initiation through encounter with wild nature and the more-than-human world, while his nature-based maps of human development and the psyche offer alternatives to fragmented, ego-centric models of adulthood, revealing how fully and creatively humans can mature when soul and wild nature guide us toward becoming visionaries and artisans of cultural renaissance during our collective dark night.
