Janine Benyus is a biologist, author, innovation consultant, and self-proclaimed “nature nerd” who popularized the field of biomimicry through her groundbreaking 1997 book “Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature,” which named an emerging discipline that emulates nature’s designs and processes to create healthier, more sustainable solutions. Since the book’s release, Benyus has evolved the practice of biomimicry into a global movement, speaking worldwide about what humanity can learn from the genius that surrounds us while demonstrating how nature’s 3.8 billion years of research and development can inform human innovation. In 1998, she co-founded the world’s first bio-inspired consultancy, Biomimicry 3.8 (formerly the Biomimicry Guild), bringing nature’s sustainable designs to over 250 clients, including Boeing, Nike, General Electric, Interface, Procter and Gamble, and other major corporations seeking solutions inspired by natural systems. In 2006, Benyus and Bryony Schwan co-founded the Biomimicry Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to making biology a natural part of the design process through annual global biomimicry design challenges that mobilize tens of thousands of students and practitioners worldwide. The Institute provides the world’s most comprehensive biomimicry inspiration database, AskNature, while fostering the Global Biomimicry Network that connects innovators working to solve sustainability problems through nature-inspired solutions ranging from solar cells that mimic leaves to adhesives inspired by gecko feet.
Why their voice matters: Benyus demonstrates that nature contains the solutions to humanity’s greatest challenges, providing a practical framework for sustainable innovation that works with rather than against natural systems while showing that environmental protection and technological advancement are complementary rather than competing goals when we learn to emulate rather than exploit nature’s designs.
