Food entrepreneurship becomes a pathway to economic justice, cultural preservation, and community power for women, immigrants, and people of color.

La Cocina is a community-centered organization rooted in San Francisco’s Mission District, dedicated to advancing equity in food business ownership. Founded to support women, immigrants, and people of color, La Cocina transforms informal food enterprises into sustainable, income-generating businesses by providing affordable commercial kitchen space, training, capital access, and a deeply supportive entrepreneurial community. The organization is built on a simple but powerful belief: talented entrepreneurs, when given the right resources, can build businesses that nourish families, cultures, and cities.

Since its founding in 2005, La Cocina has served as a launchpad for hundreds of food entrepreneurs whose work reflects cultural heritage, creativity, and resilience. By centering those historically excluded from traditional pathways to ownership, La Cocina helps participants build skills, create jobs, and steward resources in ways that strengthen local economies. Its vision extends beyond individual success toward collective prosperity—where food becomes a vehicle for cultural connection, dignity, and long-term economic mobility.

Why It Matters: La Cocina challenges inequities embedded in food systems and entrepreneurship by shifting who gets access to opportunity. By investing in working-class, immigrant, and BIPOC entrepreneurs, the organization creates pathways to ownership that counter structural barriers rooted in racism, sexism, and economic exclusion. Its work demonstrates how community-based business models can foster cultural preservation, economic justice, and thriving, interconnected neighborhoods.
