Maurizio Benazzo

Filmmaker, Consciousness Explorer, & Science & Nonduality (SAND)Co-Founder
The journey across the ocean was just the beginning—the real voyage is the exploration of consciousness itself, where science and spirituality meet in the depths of who we really are.

Maurizio Benazzo grew up in Genova, Italy, where he spent his early adult years working for the local government creating internationally renowned social centers and writing about education and pedagogy, while beginning his lifelong spiritual exploration through practices including Zen Buddhism, Transcendental Meditation, Yogic philosophy, Catholicism, and Philosophy. In 1985, Benazzo embarked on an extraordinary four-month journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States aboard the Leudo “Felice Manin,” a 98-year-old Lateen sailboat, landing in New York City where he remained for 17 years pursuing a career in television and motion picture production with experience in all aspects of production both in front of and behind the camera, including acting, directing, cinematography, and distribution. Co-founder with his wife Zaya Benazzo of Science and Nonduality (SAND), Maurizio has dedicated his later career to exploring and documenting conversations about consciousness, spirituality, and the intersection of science and nondual wisdom traditions through conferences, films, and educational programs that bring together leading scientists, philosophers, and spiritual teachers. His unique background, combining practical government work, spiritual seeking, maritime adventure, and media production, informs his approach to creating spaces where diverse perspectives can dialogue about consciousness and reality’s fundamental nature. Through SAND’s global conferences and media projects, Benazzo continues facilitating conversations that explore what he sees as humanity’s evolution toward greater understanding of the interconnected nature of existence, drawing on both his Italian roots in community building and his decades of spiritual exploration across traditions.

Why their voice matters: Benazzo demonstrates how diverse life experiences—from community organizing to spiritual seeking to media production—can inform approaches to consciousness exploration that transcend cultural and disciplinary boundaries, while his work with SAND shows how creating authentic dialogue spaces allows scientific and spiritual perspectives to inform each other rather than remaining in separate silos.
