The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) works to establish and defend the legal rights of immigrants regardless of background and transform the immigration system to one that affords equal opportunity for all. Founded in 1984 as the Midwest Immigrant Rights Center by a small group of attorneys providing representation to people from Haiti and Central America fleeing violence and persecution, the organization has grown from serving 82 people with 60 volunteer attorneys in its first year to a nationally recognized organization with more than 160 professionals and a network of 2,000-plus pro bono attorneys providing legal services to more than 11,000 people annually. Becoming an independent 501(c)(3) in 2024, NIJC continues to defend the rights and dignity of immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees, representing thousands each year in applications for legal status and defending individuals’ rights to live in safety with their loved ones.
Why It Matters: While the political and legal landscape immigrants face constantly changes, the need to defend human rights and uphold the rule of law irrespective of politics remains constant—and people fleeing violence and persecution deserve skilled legal representation regardless of their background or resources. By combining direct legal services to thousands with advocacy to transform a deeply flawed system, NIJC addresses both immediate needs and root causes of injustice. The growth from 60 volunteer attorneys to 2,000-plus pro bono partners demonstrates that defending immigrant rights mobilizes a broad commitment to justice when infrastructure exists to channel it effectively.
