Native Governance Center is a Native-led nonprofit based in St. Paul, Minnesota, dedicated to assisting Native nations in strengthening their governance systems and capacity to exercise sovereignty. Opening in January 2016 in response to a need identified by Tribal leaders from the 23 Native nations sharing geography with Mni Sota Makoce, North Dakota, and South Dakota, the organization works at the intersection of leadership development and Tribal governance support. Native Governance Center teaches a Native nation rebuilding approach—five research-based strategies for strengthening Indigenous governance—understanding that Native nations with stronger governance systems are better able to use their sovereignty to determine their own future and improve quality of life. The organization provides customized resources, learning experiences, and technical assistance while training Indigenous changemakers through the Native Nation Rebuilders program, founded on Indigenous values and real-life leadership success stories, always planning for the next seven generations.

By centering a Native nation-rebuilding framework grounded in both on-the-ground experience and academic research, the organization demonstrates that strengthening governance systems is the pathway through which sovereignty becomes practical power to shape futures and improve lives.
