Advancing news literacy education in K-12 schools through free virtual classroom resources that help students spot falsehoods, understand media bias, find reliable sources, and think critically, with a vision that all U.S. students graduate with these essential skills for informed civic participation.

The News Literacy Project (NLP) recognizes that false information erodes the trust that connects us and is building a national movement to rebuild it by helping educators shape the next generation of resilient, independent thinkers. Through a free virtual classroom, NLP helps students learn to spot falsehoods, understand media bias, find reliable sources, and think critically, with lessons, activities, infographics, and resources covering misinformation, conspiratorial thinking, algorithms, and more. NLP helps teachers give students skills to recognize unreliable sources and develop the ability to tell what’s real and what’s not, working to ensure all students have the news literacy skills needed to make informed decisions. NLP’s mission is to advance the development and teaching of news literacy in K-12 education, with a vision that all students in the United States are skilled in news literacy before they graduate from high school, preparing them to think critically and independently as active participants in society.

Why it matters: NLP addresses the erosion of trust caused by false information by equipping the next generation with skills to navigate an overwhelming information landscape where distinguishing reliable sources from unreliable ones is increasingly difficult. By providing free resources to K-12 educators nationwide, NLP ensures that news literacy isn’t limited to privileged students but becomes a foundational skill for all young people, preparing them to think critically and independently before they graduate. The organization recognizes that democracy requires active participants who can make informed decisions, making news literacy education essential infrastructure for a functioning society.
