Nipun Mehta is the founder of CharityFocus (now ServiceSpace), a fully volunteer-run organization that has delivered millions of dollars of web-related services to the nonprofit world for free while building a global community of 285,000 members dedicated to compassionate action and gift economy principles. Originally pursuing a Computer Science and Philosophy degree at UC Berkeley and working at Sun Microsystems, Mehta became dissatisfied with dot-com greed in the late 90s and went to a homeless shelter with three friends to “give with absolutely no agendas,” which led to creating CharityFocus and its inspiration portals that now receive 100 million hits annually. In 2001, at age 25, Mehta quit his job to become a “full-time volunteer” without a survival plan beyond six months, and in 2005, he and his wife Guri embarked on an open-ended walking pilgrimage in India, living on a dollar a day while performing random acts of kindness, profiling inspiring people, and cultivating truth through 1000 kilometers of walking followed by three months of monastery meditation. Recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public Service and President’s Volunteer Service Award, Mehta serves on advisory boards of the Seva Foundation, Dalai Lama Foundation, and Airline Ambassadors while demonstrating how web technologies can leverage collaborative and transformational giving. His work creatively bridges technology and spirituality, offering insights into service-oriented leadership and organizational design based on gift economy principles rather than traditional market transactions.
