Thriving Communities creates documentary films that elevate community solutions to the challenges of our times, telling stories about “common people doing uncommon work for the common good.” Born from the joy and inspiration that founder Jerry Millhon found in storytelling while serving as Director of the Whidbey Institute in 2012, the organization produces two to four documentaries annually about individuals and organizations positively impacting their communities, donating each film to the featured organization. Based in Clinton, Washington, Thriving Communities goes beyond the screen through “Gatherings”—premiere events that honor those filmed and provide space for connection with them and the community. For over twelve years across sixty-plus organizations filmed, the work has listened, learned, and laid foundation for action.
Why it matters: The stories of people making profound difference in neighborhoods often go untold, and sharing them catalyzes real action—one partner film inspired $1 million in new funding; a Gathering connected volunteers who collaborated on a successful grant; another Gathering inspired founding of three new organizations; films about community land trusts led to more land trusts being developed; one unique gardening concept traveled 1,000 miles from one community to another through these connections. By donating professional documentary films and providing strategic support, Thriving Communities helps organizations share their stories, strengthen their impact, and spark conversations, collaborations, and community that extend far beyond the screen. The model demonstrates that uplifting those who create lasting impact inspires others to act.
