Community-led solutions advance the human right to nutritious food while confronting the social, racial, and economic injustices that cause hunger.

WhyHunger is a global organization working to end hunger by advancing the human right to nutritious food and supporting community-led solutions rooted in justice. Founded in 1975 by musician Harry Chapin and radio DJ Bill Ayres, the organization emerged from the belief that hunger is not caused by scarcity, but by systemic inequities—racism, economic injustice, and environmental harm—that shape access to food. From the start, WhyHunger has centered people’s lived experiences as the foundation for lasting change.

Through partnerships with grassroots organizations, artists, and social movements, WhyHunger connects people to immediate food resources while investing in long-term, structural solutions that shift power and strengthen local food systems. Its work amplifies the voices of those most impacted by hunger, ensuring that policies and narratives are shaped by communities themselves. By combining cultural engagement with advocacy and resource-sharing, WhyHunger reframes hunger as a solvable injustice rather than an inevitable condition.

Why It Matters: WhyHunger challenges charity-only approaches to food insecurity by addressing the root causes that create hunger in the first place. By aligning food access with human dignity, accountability, and justice, the organization advances a vision of food systems that nourish both people and communities. Its work reminds us that ending hunger requires not just feeding people—but transforming the systems that deny basic rights.
