Z Johnson is Co-Director of NewStories, a nonprofit that works alongside communities, organizations, and leaders navigating disruption and profound transition—strengthening the relationships, learning, and collaborative capacity needed for regenerative futures to emerge. Using her experience as a learning scientist, neuroscientist, dancer, and dharma practitioner, Z invites the work of designing for life from a place of joy, creating embodied experiences that reveal and connect while activating teams and community leaders as they co-create specific new habits with the power to make visionary aspirations into reality.
Z’s two decades of work with Indigenous learning communities have taught her that values alignment, embodiment, and deep integration are keys to transformation that lasts, recognizing that the practices of our daily lives are the key to changing our world toward resilience. Her approach honors relationship to place and ecology, relationship to kin and community, and relationship to self and shadow as vital elements informing how each of us walks upon the Earth. As a learning scientist and neuroscientist, Z understands that lasting change requires not just new ideas but new neural pathways formed through embodied practice, bringing scientific rigor to the art of transformation.
Z’s multifaceted dance with living systems design integrates the precision of neuroscience with the wisdom of Indigenous learning communities, the groundedness of somatic practice with the spaciousness of dharma, demonstrating that bringing to life new patterns for relationship, resilience, and regenerativity demands engaging the whole human—body, mind, heart, and spirit. Whether working with community leaders navigating climate disruption, organizations redesigning for equity, or teams learning to embody regenerative principles, Z creates the conditions for people to access their innate capacity for transformation and discover that designing for life from a place of joy is not only possible but essential.
Through her work at NewStories, Z helps bridge the gap between visionary aspiration and grounded reality, showing that the future we long for is built not through grand gestures but through the daily practices that rewire our nervous systems, reshape our relationships, and regenerate our connections to place, community, and the living world.
